PAGB PDI Championships (Warwick) 15 Jul 2023

Report by Stephen Jones on the Premier League of Club Photography - Warwick 2023
Dorchester’s second place in the Western Counties DPIC meant that we qualified for the 2023 PAGB PDI Championships. So Helen and Stephen returned to a darkened room at the Arts Centre of Warwick University on Saturday 15 July, our first face-to-face visit there since 2019.

The competition is an inter-club battle between the top two clubs in each UK photographic federation, together with the qualifying finalists (10 clubs in 2022) and plate winners (2 clubs tied) from the previous year - making a grand total of 41 clubs. We were joined by Bristol to make up the pair of qualifying clubs from the Western Counties. We has already entered our ‘bank’ of 40 images from club members and pre-selected our 8 first round images.

We were placed equal 11th after the first round of 8 pre-selected images. After the second round (another 8 images) we'd dropped to 18th place. The top 8 clubs went forward into the final; the remaining 33 clubs fought it out for the Plate. In the Plate we entered 8 images, of which four had been used in Round 1 or 2. The judging was fair and consistent, but as usual the plate round was a bit of a lottery with a few points either way making a big difference in the final ranking. In the end Dorchester finished equal 14th in the plate, tying with our friends from Fordingbridge (representing the Southern Counties) on 96 points.

We took work by 17 different photographers and used work by 11. These are the photographers / photos that scored 12 or more:

Carole Zimmerman - “Dominance” 12
Helen Jones - “Challenge and Defend” 12, “Head to Head” 13
Jane Lee - “Blue Tit with Nesting Material” 13, “First Year Cubs, Svalbard” 12
Jenny Warr - “Marbled White on Clover” 12
Lisa Bukalders - “What Now?” 14
Peter Yendell - “Hold Tight” 12
Stephen Jones - “In the Groove” 12
Tim Downton - “Glossy Ibis with Leech” 13
Tony Gill - “Fire and Ice” 12

Our judges for the day were Steven LePrevost, Sue Sibley and Libby Smith. The joint winners were Chorley and Wigan 10 in the Final, with Doncaster winning the Plate.

All the images that we used can be seen in our Warwick Gallery
