The Cigarette Card Collector by Bob Davies
The Cigarette Card Collector by Bob Davies

Canon 5D Mk II with Canon 70-200 f/2.8L lens, 1/10 second at f/9.0, ISO 3200

I was struggling for an image for a vintage competition at my camera club until the night before when I had the inspiration to use my brother-in-law's cigarette cards as a theme. The subject was in fact my brother-in-law and hopefully shows a typical working man following his hobby by candlelight. Note the many different facets in the image including: national health spectacles held together by plasters, tip less cigarette in the mouth, candle, braces over the shoulder, dirty fingernails, pint glass of beer, plate used as an ashtray and flat cap. The whole thing took about an hour to set up.

I think this is a wonderful image because it depicts exactly a scene from the late 1940s. I can see my father doing just this.
