Report on the Grand Final of the Grand Final of Camera Club of the Year 2017

News - Grand Final - Camera Club of the Year 2017

If you were at the club last week you will know already that Dorchester came Second in the Grand Final of the Photography News Camera Club of the Year.

The final was a grueling experience for our team of Frances Underwood, Penny Piddock, Stephen Jones and Richard Anders. They traveled to the Royal Ordnance Depot at Weedon Bec, near Daventry in Northamptonshire to take part in a day of photo challenges. There were five different scenarios, and each one was undertaken using a different unfamiliar, Fujifilm camera (one each!).

The scenarios were against the clock and we had just one hour per challenge to take photos, process them then hand them to the organisers. It was an exhausting day, with little time to rest between challenges. The team gelled, worked well under pressure and their time management was spot-on. They did the Club proud and put Dorchester on the national map again!

There is a gallery for our Grand Final Images. Please note that these images were produced under challenging and unfamiliar conditions and are presented as such in this gallery. There is a separate gallery for our images from the qualifying rounds.

They were beaten by the 'home' side, New City from Milton Keynes who were well-deserved winners. To see their report and their set of final images, visit and follow the links to their excellent write-up on the final.

Thank you to Jane Tearle and Derek Philpott who lent the team their Fuji cameras to practice with and to Brad Matthews, who though not currently a club member, set up a private model and car shoot so the team could gain some practice in the scenario they felt least comfortable with.

We would like to thank everyone who sent us images for consideration for use in the heats - as with every competition, we need choice. If your image wasn't selected, please don't be discouraged as we were often looking for a particular style of photo to fit our panel . Every image was considered, not just by us but by other experienced photographers in the club who assisted with the selection

We would not have reached the final without your contribution and you sent us some amazing photos to choose from. . It often took hours of discussion to select the 5 images for each round. We won two qualifying rounds and came second twice. Big thanks to the following people whose images were used: Barbara Jenkins, Bob Davies, Carol Tritton, the late David Cantrille, Dee Wareham, Di Tilsley, Frances Underwood, Helen Jones, Iain Cameron, Iain Friend, Janet Haines, Jane Lee, Jane Tearle, John Tilsley, Mary Cantrille, Paul Clarke, Penny Piddock, Richard Anders, Stephen Jones, Stephen Lee, Tim Downton and Tony Gilll.

There will be a feature a forthcoming issue of Photography News, so watch out for that.

We WILL be entering again next year and it would be lovely to get to the final again - so we will be calling for images as soon as the first round of the competition is announced - usually around Christmas. Please do contribute!
