Competitions - A review of our Open Digital Section A Competition judged by Mike Dales, 07 Oct 2019

A review by Helen Jones - Open Digital Competition, judged by Mike Dales ARPS CPAGB.
We held our first Competition of the 2019/2020 season on Monday 7 October. It was our Section A Open Digital and our judge was Mike Dales ARPS CPAGB.

The competition was very well supported with 73 photographs covering every genre - quite a challenge but Mike is a very experienced judge and took it all in his stride. He gave every image full consideration and a detailed, objective critique. His response to all our photographs was positive and enthusiastic - it was clear that he really enjoyed photography of all genres and was quick to respond emotionally to images.

He told us exactly what he liked about every photo and also what he felt didn't work so well - but, very importantly, all his comments were backed up with reasons. He told us exactly why he liked or did not like particular aspects of a photograph. If photos did not get held back, the photographers understood why and this gave them something to work on to improve either these photographs or to bear in mind in the future.

Mike had a great sense of humour and there was plenty of laughter. He was a very approachable judge too - there were lots of people chatting and asking him questions in the interval. Thank you so much for judging for us Mike - we greatly appreciated your feedback and it was an excellent start to our competition season.

Thank you to our competition team of Malcolm Macnaughtan, Susan Buckland and projectionist Iain Friend. The evening ran extremely smoothly and our new PhotoEntry system worked well. Iain was able to send the results from Dicentra to PhotoEntry from the Brownsword Hall at the end of the evening so that Stephen J could put them on the website as soon as he got home.
