Competitions - A review of the Wessex Trophy Competition, 28 Oct 2019

A review by Helen Jones of the Wessex Trophy Competition, judged by Mike Hendon
Dorchester hosted the annual Wessex Battle competition for the Wessex Trophy on Monday 28 October 2019. This is a competition between local clubs - and seven clubs entered - Dorchester, Blandford, Bridport, Swanage, Wareham, Weymouth and Yeovil. Each club submits 8 photos (no more than 2 per author or 2 nature) for critique and marking by the judge. There is a trophy for the winning club and also for the photographer of the best overall image.

Our judge was Mike Hendon LRPS who is a member of Bath Photographic Society. Mike treated us all to a very full, detailed and considered critique of every photo, telling us what he enjoyed and also making helpful suggestions for improvement. It was clear how much he enjoyed looking at our work and he was a very enthusiastic judge. We had a packed house with representatives from every club keen to hear Mike's verdict on their work.

Dorchester's entry was selected from our recent Open Digital Competition. In keeping with past practice we selected the winner of both the A and the B section plus a further 4 images from the A and 2 from the B section to give plenty of variety of subject and genre. Three of our photos did particularly well and were held back: Jane Lee's 'Rosamol Sand Patterns' scored 9; Jenny Warrr's 'Two Common Blue Butterflies' scored 9.5 and Tim Donwton's beautiful 'Kingfishers Mating' scored 10 and was the overall individual winner. Club wise, congratulations to Blandford who were clear winners with 69.5 points. Wareham came second with 68 points and Dorchester were 3rd with 67.5.

Our charity for the evening was Wessex 4x4 Response. The raffle raised £100 and donations in lieu of payment for teas & coffees raised a further £36.10. Thank you to everyone for their generosity.

The evening ended with a small presentation to John Tilsley who has organised the Wessex Battle for 20 years, bringing local clubs together to share their work. John is now retiring from organising this competition, leaving it in the hands of the clubs. Every club contributed towards a small gift for him and Di.

Thanks are due to many others: Mike, our judge; Di for reading the titles so well, as she has done for 20 years; Stephen J for extremely smooth projection; Jane T and Helen L on the raffle; Spike, Maggie and coffee team; Jane L, Stephen L, Penny, Tim & Sue for their behind the scenes assistance in various matters and Neil for the presentation photos. Thanks too, to all the clubs who took part!

Next year our friends at Wareham will be hosting the Wessex Battle - details will follow.
