Review - Marilyn Roberts, Section B Open Competition & Informal Critique, 19 Oct 2020

A review by Janine Scola - Marilyn Roberts DPAGB BPE3*, Section B Open Competition & Informal Critique, 19 October 2020
With the continuation of our Club evenings taking place on Zoom, this was a wonderful opportunity to invite Marilyn Roberts, all the way from Yorkshire - not only to judge our Section B Open competition, but also to provide all members with the chance to have some of their images critiqued by a renowned PAGB Judge and Mentor.

With the start of the evening being an Open competition, there was a wide genre of images, but with Marilyn’s wealth of experience, and expert eye, she was able to provide fair comment on each, alongside some very helpful advice and suggestions. On the night, Jenny Warr took first place with her stunning image of Red-footed Falcons mating. second place went to Des Fogarty with his image ‘Santa Special’ - reminding us winter is not too far away! Third place was awarded to Paul Raudner with this amazing image of two White Iberian Storks – well done.

After a short interval, it was time for the ‘big critique’. Again, there was another wide selection of images across all the genres of photography. Marilyn’s observations of each image were as objective as any judge, and her useful hints and tips from tones, spot healing and removing distractions to name but a few – all to be done subtly! - were well received. Some of the images she selected randomly to show, by following ‘Marilyn’s touch’ (her advice!), how the impact of the photograph changed to make it really stand out from the rest. This was a great way to fully understand what was being suggested and why, and seeing the respective images side-by-side as comparison.

Another great evening, that was well supported by over fifty club members, and no matter where our experience lies, Marilyn provided fun and instructive observations for everyone to take home!
