PAGB Inter-Club Competitions Round up, 23 May 2021

Dorchester Success at PAGB Inter-Club Competitions, 23 May 2021
Here is a round up of our results in four national inter-club competitions run by the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. These competitions are normally judged in January, but the judging was delayed to comply with national restrictions on gatherings.

PAGB GB Open and Nature Cups (Digital)

After our second place at the Western Counties DPIC in February, we had to wait another month for the results of two national interclub competitions that are normally held about the same time. These are the PAGB GB Open Cup and GB Cup for Nature (both for digital images) and these were judged in mid-March.

We finished equal 24th (of 120 clubs) in the PAGB GB Open Cup. We were particularly pleased with this result because we maintained our 2020 ranking in a competition with a much bigger entry. Our final selection was for 22 images from 15 different members. A special mention goes to Jane Lee, who scored 13 for ‘Mormon Barn and Grand Teton’, and to Garry Prescott who scored 13 for ‘Botallack Mine’.

We finished equal 6th (of 104 clubs) in the PAGB GB Cup for Nature and tied with Wigan 10 again – an excellent achievement. Two Dorchester images received top scores and awards: Jenny Warr’s ‘Marbled Whites on Pyramidal Orchids’ (Best Butterflies) and Tim Downton’s ‘Glossy Ibis Tossing Grub’ (Best Feeding). Our other high scoring images were Jenny Warr’s ‘Red Footed Falcons Mating’, Spike Piddock’s ‘Porcelain Crab on Host Anemone’ and Susan Buckland’s ‘Bearded Tit Male’, all scoring 13.

Judges were Gordon Jenkins, Richard Speirs and Howard Tate.

PAGB GB Open and Nature Trophies (Print)

We entered the PAGB Trophy (Print) inter club competitions for the first time since 2015, making our selection remotely during lockdown, then waiting until restrictions eased before collecting the prints and sending them to the PAGB.

We then waited until the results suddenly appeared in early May. We achieved our best ever ranking in a PAGB Open competition, with joint second place in the PAGB Open Trophy. We were also ranked second in the PAGB Nature Trophy. A brilliant result all round

The club rankings for each competition are based on the top 12 scores awarded to the images from each club. It was tight at the top for the Open Trophy. Four clubs (Rolls Royce, Arden, Catchlight and Dorchester) tied on the top score of 163 before countback resulted in first place being awarded to Arden, with the other three clubs placed joint second. In Nature we were 2nd overall with 161 – though the winners Rolls Royce were well ahead with a score of 169.

Special congratulations to:
Tony Gill - Bronze Medal - Best Landscape – 'Wood Beyond the World' (Colour version) (Open)
Jane Lee – Certificate – 'Bison on the Ridge' (Open)
Jane Lee - Bronze Medal – Best Mammal - 'Svalbard Walrus Pod' (Nature)
Stephen Lee – Certificate – 'Red Fox Running Downhill' (Nature)

Judges were Andrea Hargreaves, Alan Stopher and Howard Tate.
