Review - “Photographic Opportunity” by Leigh Preston, 13 Sep 2021

A review by Cheryl Connor - “Photographic Opportunity” by Leigh Preston, plus PAGB Trophy Images, 13 Sep 2021
First night back for me and what a delight it was!

Firstly Val did the honours presenting Sue Buckland with her medal from PAGB Masters of Print, Gary Prescott the Portman Trophy for Nature and a very special thank you to Penny for her hard work in getting this years' programme up and running. All so well deserved.

The main event was a presentation by Leigh Preston via video entitled 'Photo Opportunity'. Leigh's superb images reflected his interests in art, history music and hill-walking as well as a desire to record places in the UK before they were knocked down!

We were treated to wild landscapes shot on crisp winter days, urban and industrial landscapes conveying emotion and drama, rock musicians capturing the passion and energy they displayed, as well as humorous environmental portraits taken at the Edinburgh fringe and more traditional studio portraits which focused on capturing a sense of allure and feminine grace.

Leigh emphasized the importance of shooting in inclement weather to create atmosphere and emotion as well as seeking to simplify what we included in an image to focus the attention of the viewer. He used high key techniques, wide-angle lens, higher view points and BW processing. The whole presentation was a feast for the eyes and illustrated his mastery of a wide variety of genres.

The second part of the night was a showing of all the stunning images which won places in the PAGB 2021 Open and Nature Trophy competitions. Dorchester was very well represented coming 2nd in the nature.

A truly great night - an inspiration and challenge - to improve where we are now in our journey, whatever our photographic passion may be.
