Tim is a local photographer based in Dorset and describes himself as an urban landscape photographer transitioned into travel. He particularly likes to take photos of symmetry and buildings.
His inspiration for his route 66 journey came from Tony Worobiec, a fine art photographer, and in particular his Icons of the Highway photo. After seeing this photo, he wanted to go to America himself and take this photo.
Tim had done his research giving us the history of Route 66, known as the main street of America. His trip took place in 2024. Flying from Heathrow, London to New Mexico. His 9-datrip travelling with a group in two Ford Explorers took in part of Route 66. He showed
us several photos of very large neon signs, (some in better condition than others) some funny signs in Albuquerque and photos of abandoned buildings ie garages, shops, banks and houses. Being in the desert there were signs to be careful of the
rattle snakes but luckily, he never saw one on his travels.
He took photos of graffiti some of it too good to be called graffiti. Visited a memorabilia museum and Tucumcari which looks like it is from the 1950s & the village of ten wigwams each wigwam having a classic car outside. He explained this wigwam village was going to be used by Pixar for their film “Cars’. He even showed us a photo of the Scorpion Lolly that he bought for his mate from a souvenir shop being assured it was safe to eat!
Eventually he reached the Blue Swallow Motel the photo that had inspired him in the first place to make this trip where he met Robert the owner. He waited several hours for the right time of day to take his photo.
Tim also gave us a demonstration on Photoshop showing why he had underexposed the photo.
Tim’s included short extracts music “Standing on a Corner in Winslow, Arizona” when he visited Winslow, Arizona and another snippet of the famous 'Route 66 song. He visited the Roadkill Café with its menu slogan “You Kill It We Grill It”!
It was a very enjoyable evening and there could even be a sequel as Tim is planning on returning to Route 66 to continue his journey west.
