Street Special Interest Group

The Street Photography Special Interest Group meets on zoom every first Thursday of the month.  The members present a set of images that they have taken on the subject of Street photography.  Feedback is given from the other members of the group.  We have the occasional outing to locations in the area and these have included Bath, Bristol, Bridport, Dorchester, Poole, Weymouth.  Future outings include Christmas Markets.

Below you will find a selection of our images, an explanation of what street photography is all about and finally a programme of future events.

What is Street Photography?

Street photography, a genre of photography that records everyday life in a public place. The very publicness of the setting enables the photographer to take candid pictures of strangers, often without their knowledge.

Is Street Photography legal?

Street photography is legal in most public spaces, but you should consider things like privacy, security, commercial use and sharing images online when taking a shot. If you are asked to delete a photograph by someone its probably best to do so. Different countries have different rules so do your research first.

Does a street image have to be in colour?

No, in fact black and white can be a better choice for street photography. Composition, contrast, and mood can be improved in black and white and avoid confusing arrays of colours.
