Creative Special Interest Group

It can be argued that, by its very nature, all photography is ‘creative’, so what do we mean by creative photography?
Here is one explanation:

‘The intentional use of extra photographic elements and/or processes, either individually or in any combination to go beyond the straightforward pictorial rendering of a scene to produce something which alters reality in an obvious way, whether in camera or in post processing. The end result might convey a feeling, a message, tell a story or just be visually pleasing.’

Originally called the Intentional Camera Movement SIG, the Creative SIG was formed in 2020 as a forum for enthusiasts of ICM to share their work. The remit of the SIG soon expanded to embrace Multiple Exposure (ME) and now includes any creative technique, whether in camera or in post processing, and as such was renamed the Creative SIG.

The Group currently has about 35 members who utilise a variety of creative techniques including: ICM, ME (this could be in camera or in post processing, straight or ICM or a combination), high and low-key photography (which may include the above techniques), Pep Ventosa style, abstracts, creation of composites, the use of post processing filters and any other creative camera techniques. Some examples of the images created by members are shown here.

The Creative SIG meets monthly on Zoom on the second Thursday of the month, with meetings commencing at 7.30pm. Group members submit images to share which are viewed as a slide show. Members are encouraged to talk about their images and explain any specific techniques or particular inspiration. Other members may comment, make suggestions or ask questions. Sometimes a member might give a short demonstration of a particular technique. The meetings are recorded, and the Zoom recording and slideshow are made available after the meeting for all those unable to attend or for subsequent viewing.

There are no rules about what can or cannot be shown. The only rule is to be friendly, encouraging and supportive. Through the SIG, we hope that members will develop their creativity, share ideas and inspire each other. The Group doesn’t take things too seriously but encourages members to experiment, and above all, to enjoy and have fun with their photography.
