In the first part of his talk, Matt discussed much of the theory behind street photography, the use of light, colour and composition. He showed examples of how he, and some other street photographers, use silhouettes, blur, repetition, layering and the decisive moment to build their images.
In the second part Matt addressed some of the practical issues facing street photographers covering equipment and camera settings, choice of location and time of day. Throughout his talk Matt illustrated his points with some excellent images from around the world.
Matt’s enthusiasm for his topic was apparent, and he responded to many questions from the audience both before the break and at the end of the evening. For those of us who do not see ourselves as street photographers, there was much in Matt’s presentation which could be applied to other genres and I for one, am now tempted to dip my toe in a new area of photography as a result of the evening.
