An into to drone photography, by Saleem Taibjee

I have long been tempted to dip my toe into the world of drone photography and Saleem Taibjee’s talk did nothing to dissuade me. Saleem has been using a drone since 2017 and during the first half of this evening he illustrated how he uses a drone to give a different perspective to his landscape photography. The development of Saleem’s arial photographic skills could be seen from his early images of Maiden Castle to some very recent pictures of the same subject handily close to his home!

Saleem showed how all the normal techniques used by landscape photographers enhance his images and how a drone can show well-known places across Dorset and beyond in a unique way from novel angles. Careful consideration of the position of the sun and HDR techniques gave his pictures a “wow factor” not possible from ground level. Shots of Saleem’s daughter windsurfing and video of some paragliders suggested the potential of the drone for subjects such as sport or nature as well as landscape.

As well as showing us some superb images, Saleem had brought with him technical details of his drones, the rules surrounding flying them and the apps he uses to process both stills and video. Thank you very much Saleem, I expect several members will be following up for more information and I look forward to seeing more of your drone images at the Club.

The story behing the picture

After the coffee break Jane Tearle, Lisa Buckalders, Stephen Hester, Maggie Lawrence, Neil Crick, Rumi Whitcher, John Tilsley, Jayne Bond, Cheryl Connor, Andrew Washington and Chris Parvin all took up the challenge of telling the story behind one of their favourite pictures. The stories ranged from memorable meetings with strangers, through treasured encounters with wildlife to hilarious anecdotes which had us all laughing out loud. Chris’s use of an audio visual to tell his story provided a perfect segway into the finale of the evening – an AV from Saturday’s workshop with Ian Bateman in which Ian showed Club Members in a way they have never been seen before.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this a successful evening.
