My Approach to Travel Photography

A very experienced traveller who has visited over 100 countries, some of them dozens of times and some very remote. Steve made only passing references to the equipment he uses, for example, how he lost a top-of-the-range Nikon to a shark! Neither did he dwell on camera settings. His emphasis was on how to take photographs which tell a story and elicit an emotional response.

He does this through building relationships with the people he photographs, this can involve eating, drinking or smoking whatever is put in front of him or joining in whatever activity is going on. Steve also keeps a lookout for a better position to shoot from, even if that means wading in a murky river and feeling something unpleasant between your toes or getting up close and personal with a cobra!

The effectiveness of this approach showed in the quality of the images which illustrated Steve’s talk. Throughout the evening Steve’s respect and affection for the people, places and cultures that he has visited was apparent. In summary, an inspiring evening full of amusing anecdotes which aroused the wanderlust in everyone present.
